Hi! I am a Senior Lecturer at the Department of International and Strategic Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in University of Malaya. I completed my PhD in Politics and Government examining social movements and democratization with a focus on the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih). My research areas are on non-state actors, transnational activism, protest research, human rights and democratization with a regional focus on Southeast Asia/ ASEAN, especially Malaysia and Timor Leste. Thematically, I also explore processes and patterns of political participation and mobilization, digital activism and the interaction between social movements and state.

I am the author of “Seeds of Dissent”, a compilation of my public commentaries on academic freedom, human rights, protests and political change in Malaysia. I also edited Volume I and II of Ini Bukan Klise, a compilation of essays on political issues in Malaysia.

I was formerly a columnist in a prominent independent news website, The Malaysian Insider, that was forced to shut down by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak’s administration in March 2016. The closing down of the portal is one of the key reasons of why I decided to revive my website, with the intention that I could continue to share my commentaries and thoughts with the public. As a believer that dissent is not illegal, I choose writings as my main form of advocacy on civil activism.

On this website, you may find more about my work in research and advocacy. This also includes my papers, old articles particularly online public writings and any other related materials, which I will be uploading from time to time. I am open to any queries and any possible collaboration, be it on research or advocacy work. I also welcome applications from students on subjects falling within my research areas, so feel free to contact me via my email, yinghooi@gmail.com. Thank you for your interest!
